Cyclones Earn Preseason Big 12 Awards
- ISU junior Craig Brackins and senior Marquis Gilstrap (pronounced Mar-KWEZ) were honored in the 2009-10 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Awards...Brackins was a preseason All-Big 12 First-Team pick and Gilstrap, a junior college transfer from Gulf Coast C.C. [Fla.], was selected as the 2009 Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
- Gilstrap began his NCAA time clock in the 2005-06 season at Palm Beach C.C...after suffering a severe leg injury, he left school and worked during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 basketball seasons.
- He went back to school last year (2008-09) at Gulf Coast C.C., where he earned Panhandle Conference Player of the Year honors after averaging 22.6 points and 10.1 rebounds...he is listed as a senior because this is his fifth season of eligibility according to the NCAA “five years to play four” rule.

- Chicago State (1-0, 0-0), in its first season in the Great West Conference, recorded its first winning season (19-13) in 23 years last year...the Cougars ranked third nationally in scoring at 84.0 ppg, but will have to replace David Holston, who was one of the country’s top scorers a year ago at 25.9 ppg.
- The Cougars lost four of their top five scorers from last year’s team...their top returnee is Carl Montgomery, who was selected as the preseason Great West Player of the Year by Lindy’s Magazine.
- CSU won its season debut with an 81-61 triumph over Concordia (Ill.)...Montgomery led the Cougars with 22 points and 17 rebounds...Montgomery made 8-of-11 shots from the field.
- Afer shooting 37.0 percent in the first half, the Cougars hit on 55.2 percen in the second stanza.
- Montgomery, a 6-7, junior from Chicago, averaged 11.0 points and led the Cougars on the boards at 7.2 rpg last season...he grabbed a career-high 18 caroms vs. Longwood.
- Montgomery also ranked 54th nationally in blocks (60) and produced a team-high 63.1 percentage from the field.
- Christian Wall, a 6-1 guard from New Orleans, La., averaged 3.8 points in 16.5 minutes of action a year ago.
- Wall had 18 points in the win over Concordia.
- Haiji Martin was one rebound shy of a double-double in the win over Concordia, scoring 10 points and tallying nine boards.
