ISU Sweeps Missouri; Ties School Record With 24th Win

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Victoria Henson had 16 kills and Debbie Stadick added 14 as No. 8 Iowa State swept Missouri, 3-0 (25-14, 30-28, 25-20), Saturday night at the Hearnes Center. With the win, ISU improves to 24-4 overall and 16-3 in Big 12 play, tying the school’s record for wins during the NCAA era.

Henson and Stadick were the story offensively for the Cyclones, hitting .293 and .357, respectively. Jamie Straube finished with seven kills and hit .278. As a team, ISU hit at a .232 clip.

Defensively, ISU finished with eight blocks and 64 digs, leading Missouri (18-12, 9-9) in both categories. Ashley Mass led the way with 22 digs, while Stadick had four block assists at the net. Straube added a solo stuff and three block assists and Kelsey Petersen added three block assists as the Cyclones won in Columbia for the just third time in the last 14 years.

Kaylee Manns dished out 43 assists in the sweep and finished with seven digs. Manns had two service aces and ISU held a 4-0 edge in the category. It is the second match in a row that the Cyclones haven’t allowed an ace.

The opening set was tied at 7-7 before ISU got a kill from Hockaday and a block by Manns and Stadick to go up 9-7. Manns then notched a kill and Stadick had another out of a timeout to extend the lead to 11-7. After Missouri scored the next point, ISU went on a 14-6 run to close the set and win it 25-14. The Cyclones held the Tigers to a .045 hitting percentage in the frame and got five kills from Henson.

The second set was a barnburner with ISU fighting off a Tiger set point and Missouri fighting off four Cyclone set points before Stadick and Henson finished the set with back-to-back kills as ISU won 30-28.

With the score tied at 23 all, Missouri got a kill from Julianna Klein to earn set point. The Cyclones then scored two in a row, which included a block from Straube and Petersen. Missouri fought off that set point but Straube tallied a kill for set point two for ISU. The Tigers then fought off two more set points, but ISU proved too much as Stadick and Henson recorded kills to send the Cyclones into the locker room up 2-0.

The Cyclones took the final set 25-20 despite trailing at 15-12. With the deficit at three, Manns notched a kill and Henson added another to cut it to one. Straube and Manns then teamed up for a block to even the score. The score was tied at 17-17, but ISU scored eight of the final 11 points for the win.

Missouri was led by Paola Ampudia’s 15 kills, but the Tigers hit just .165 as a team as no other players reached double figures. Caitlyn Vann had a team-high 16 digs for the Tigers.

The Cyclones won’t take the court again until a week from today when they play host to Oklahoma in the regular season finale. The Cyclones will hold Senior Day in honor of Manns and Diane Kieger. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
