Saina, Bor to NCAA Finals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Iowa State freshman Luke Pinkelman finished 19th in the men’s shot put preliminaries (58-10 ¾), highlighting competition for the Cyclones at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships before rain and lightning delayed competition. ISU All-American steeplechaser Hillary Bor made the finals of his specialty and Cyclone freshman Betsy Saina qualified for the final of the 5,000-meter run on the John McDonnell Field track Wednesday.

The shot put effort was Pinkleman's second-best toss of his career. The Cozad, Neb. native solidified his mark with his third and final throw in the men’s shot put preliminaries. Pinkelman’s had the best mark for any freshman at the NCAA 's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

"Luke did a great job," Iowa State track and field head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I think if he had, had another throw it would have been his best."

Due to rain and lighting, many events were delayed until late in the evening, some after midnight. Iowa State's Hillary Bor qualified for Friday's 3,000-meter steeplechase final by placing fourth in his heat, with a time of 8:41.12. Iowa State freshman Betsy Saina was strong in her 5,000-meter heat, placing second in 16:16.70.  Saina's race did not start until after midnight.

"When you think about how the weather changed Hillary and Betsy's preparations, it underscores what a great job they did tonight," Ihmels said. "We went back to the hotel for a while and both were hungry.  They both put that behind them and are in the finals."

Iowa State's Lisa Koll, a Fort Dodge native, will try to defend her NCAA 10,000-meter title Thursday. Former Des Moines Roosevelt prep Kiel Uhl will run for Iowa State in the men's 10,000-meters. Burlington Cyclone Jenna Caffrey will compete in the 100-meter hurdles.
