Cyclones Finish Fifth at Big 12 Relays

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Iowa State swimming and diving team went up against its fellow conference foes for the first time this season Friday at the Mizzou Aquatics Center. The Cyclones took a fifth-place finish collecting 35 points. Texas A&M took the title with 109 points.

Seniors Abby Glaser and Nan Liu each proved to be consistent for the Cyclones on the day. Glaser produced fouth-place finishes in four events and a fifth place in another, while Liu was also part of four fourths and two fifth place-finishes.

“This was Nan’s first competition in two years,” ISU head coach Duane Sorenson said. “She really did a nice job of competing and she really raced well. Abby started the meet off almost trying too hard and she finished the meet well.”

ISU was boosted by a strong performance by the 400 medley relay team of Liu, Jeli Nixt, Glaser and Frances Calzada. The team finished fourth in the race and their time of 3:50.93 is the ninth best in school history.

“We know we have a good medley relay this year,” said Sorenson. “All four of our women know they can trust each other and push each other. Nan had a great split and Jeli went almost two seconds faster than she did last week. Abby was very consistent in her fly and Frances had a great race to finish up. That was six seconds faster than we have ever gone at this time of year so we are excited for what the future holds.”

The Cyclone divers team of Tien Tran, Abby Christensen and Sarah Nelson finished sixth with a score of 227.65 in a competitive 1-meter event. The divers rebounded on 3-meter as the team of Tran, Christensen and Jenn Botsch earned a fourth-place finish with a score of 236.30.

“I thought overall we weren’t really that far off on 1-meter,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “We were 10 points out of fourth which isn’t that much. Though we didn’t place that high, we still feel the confidence to do well.”

Iowa State will spend next weekend in Illinois. Friday night, they encounter a double-dual meet against Evansville and Illinois State in Normal. On Saturday, ISU travels to Champaign for a dual meet with Illinois.
