ISU Breaks Records At Challenge At Onion Creek

AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State women’s golf team ended its fall season by tying for sixth in the 21-team field Challenge at Onion Creek Tuesday afternoon. The Cyclones were in 17th-place after round one, but a school-record 276 tally in the second round catapulted ISU into third place heading into the final 18 holes.

ISU shattered many records in the tournament besides the 18-hole mark, which bested the previous standard by 13 shots. ISU’s team tally of 867 also broke the school record for 54 holes by 16 strokes.

Individually, ISU had three players eclipse the old 18-hole school record of 69 in its record-setting second round. Punpaka Phuntumabamrung is now ISU’s school-record holder for low 18-hole round after firing a 67, while Laurence Herman and Pennapa Pulsawath each carded 68s to help the Cyclones go 4-under in the second round.

Herman led the Cyclones by finishing in a tie for eighth place, her second top-10 showing of the year. Her three-round 212 tally broke Christi Athas’ school record (213, Northwestern Invite) for best 54-hole tournament score. Pulsawath and Phuntumabamrung tied for 18th at 215. Pulsawath, a senior from Bangkok, Thailand, has finished in the top-18 in all five fall events to help her earn a national ranking of 48 according to Golfstat.

Texas A&M took home the team title with an 839 total and San Francisco was runner-up, finishing three strokes back at 842. A&M’s Julia Boland won medalist honors with a 4-under 206.

The Cyclones will have three months off before beginning their fall schedule at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 7-9. ISU, which is currently ranked 45th nationally in the most recent Golfstat ratings, had an outstanding fall campaign. The Cyclones never finished worse than eighth-place in their five fall meets, positioning themselves as strong candidates for a NCAA Regional berth.
