AMES, Iowa – Brittney Griner scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds as No. 1 Baylor (17-1 overall, 7-0 Big 12) beat No. 24 Iowa State (13-4 overall, 4-3 Big 12), 66-51, Wednesday in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones got a team high 17 points from Anna Prins.
Iowa State narrowed the gap to 43-31 on a basket by Chelsea Poppens with 11:06 left in the game. The victory was Baylor’s 91st in its last 95 games and the defending national champions’ 15th straight win. Brynn Williamson had 11 points, including three treys for the Cyclones. She and Poppens each recorded nine rebounds.
The key stat in Wednesday's contest was the turnover margin. The Cyclones had 18 giveaways, Baylor had eight.
The score was tied 6-6 with just over three minutes gone in the first half. But Baylor gave Iowa State few quality chances at the basket. The Lady Bears held the Cyclones without a point for more than 11 minutes. By the end of that stretch, Baylor had a 21-6 lead. Iowa State got closer, trailing 28-16 after a Hallie Christofferson basket with six seconds left in the half. Baylor hit a three at the halftime buzzer and led 31-16 at intermission.
Iowa State shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field and held Baylor to 39 percent (22-56). Both teams grabbed 35 rebounds.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday, as the Cyclones take on West Virginia. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. CST.
