MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Iowa State gymnastics team (2-3 overall, 0-0 Big 12 Conference) continued its steady improvement this season with a season-best 193.950 score Saturday in the Sports Pavilion, but the Cyclones could not overcome the three top-20 teams it faced. No. 12 Minnesota (196.800) had the top tally, ahead of No. 1 Michigan (196.775) and No. 20 Central Michigan (194.650).
Minnesota's Kayla Slechta and Michigan's Sachi Sugiyama tied for the vault title with scores of 9.950. The Wolverines' Joanna Sampson won bars with a 9.850 effort. Lindsay Mable of Minnesota took top honors on beam, scoring 9.900. Mable also won floor (9.925) and the all-around (39.450).
"I am pleased with the improvement we have continued to show this season," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronanye said. "We still need to continue to progress, especially on eliminating steps on our landings that are costing us vital points. Our team also needs to get more healthy, as we have no depth at the moment."
Iowa State started on floor and registered its highest score on any event this season (48.975). Sara Townsend (9.775), Sammie Pearsall (9.725), Milan Ivory (9.850) and Henrietta Green (9.825) tallied career-high scores on the event.
Townsend continued her strong night, with a career-high effort (9.750) on vault in Iowa State's second event. The Cyclones registered 48.475 on vault, their second-highest score on the apparatus this season.
Townsend delivered her third career-high effort of the night on bars with a score of 9.750. Green delivered a 9.800 score and Michelle Shealy chipped in with a 9.750 tally. Iowa State posted 48.075 on the event.
The Cyclones finished the meet on beam and scored a season-high 48.425. Alex Marasco (9.800), Camille Santerre-Gervais (9.775) and Pearsall (9.575) posted career-high beam scores. Shealy was also solid, scoring 9.725.
The Cyclones return to action Feb. 8 when they play host to Oklahoma at 7 p.m. CT in Hilton Coliseum. The meet will be part of the Beauty and the Beast event where the Iowa State gymnastics and wrestling teams compete simultaneously.
