AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State (4-5, 0-1 Big 12) swimming and diving squad will travel to Austin, Texas this week to compete in the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The four-day event begins Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CST with the following three days featuring 10 a.m. prelims and 6 p.m. final sessions.

"This is our opportunity to compete at the highest level," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We want them to swim at their fastest and take advantage of what they have been doing in training all season. Really just trusting your training and get up there and race."

The past two weeks the Cyclones have had time to perfect their stroke and work on the details that will help them succeed this week.

"We have had some people really look good," Sorenson said. "They are really starting to pop. We also have other people that are still a little sluggish, everyone is a little bit different. Overall, I am very pleased with the women in their training."

Sophomore Amanda Paulson and junior Imelda Wistey both have had outstanding seasons, leading the Cyclones in event victories.

Paulson currently leads the Cyclones in the 50 freestyle event and finished the season with eight first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle event. The Monticello, Minn. native also broke the ARC Pool record at Illinois on Jan. 18, clocking in with a time of 23.36.

"We are hoping Amanda has a great race in the 50 freestyle, and she has really been working on her 100 freestyle so hopefully she will have a great time," Sorenson said.

Wistey has earned nine individual first-place finishes this season and has been a part of four winning relays. She currently sits first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM on the season as well as second in the 200 breaststroke.

"We are also expecting Imelda to do well in both her backstroke races and the 200 IM," Sorenson said.

"We are also interested in seeing how our distance swimmers are going to do," Sorenson said. "Kristy Kunkel, Elizabeth Kliner and Samantha Fossum have really been training well this season, so we are hoping they can step up and do a great job."

The Cyclone divers also are preparing for success at the Big 12 Championships this week.

"We have been really been putting a big emphasis on, it matters no," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "You can be good, bad or great in warm ups but when it counts is when it really matters, They have been doing a great job in practice and have a great mindset. We want to have the mind set of not making it into a big deal, and not be distracted. That is the midset we want to have when we are going down into the Big 12 Championships when the lights and pressure are on, we want to maintain confidence in what we have done."

During the season the Cyclones have been led by Elyse Brouillette who will be making her first Big 12 Championship appearance. The freshman is currently leading the Cyclones on all three boards and is currently sitting fourth overall in Cyclone history on all three boards. Brouillette has also earned her ticket to the NCAA Zone Diving Championship meet.

Senior Marley Dobyns will also make her final appearance at the Big 12 Championships. She currently sits second on the season for the 3-meter board and platform and third on the 1-meter board.  The senior has been steadily improving throughout the season and earned a personal best against conference rival Kansas on the 1-meter board with a score of 256.42, just shy of making her Zone score.

Iowa State will begin the meet with the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay on Wednesday.
