LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Iowa State junior gymnast Michelle Shealy delivered an All-America performance on the balance beam Friday in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championships in Pauley Pavilion.  Shealy scored a career-high tying 9.900 on the beam to tie for second in her session and advance to Sunday’s individual event finals on the apparatus.  By advancing to the event finals, Shealy earned All-American status.

Shealy is the first Cyclone gymnast to earn All-America honors since Janet Anson in 2007 on beam.

“I felt great on beam,” Shealy said.  “I went up there to try to do my normal routine even though we added a Gaynor yesterday to make my routine more difficult to get to finals.  We had been practicing the Gaynor all week, so we decided to put it in.  When I stuck my dismount I was so excited because I knew I had done a great routine. When I saw the score we all went crazy. When I learned I advanced to event finals and was an All-American I could not have been more excited because those were some of my goals when I first came to Iowa State.”

Shealy competed in the all-around at Friday’s competition and scored a season-high-tying 39.050 and placed 13th. In addition to her season-high mark on beam, the Snellville, Ga., native notched a season best on floor (9.825).

Shealy competed in the all-around at the NCAA Championships for the second time and topped her score from 2011 of 39.025.

“I am overjoyed Michelle has the opportunity to move onto the event finals and represent Iowa State,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “I knew that she had the potential to be an All-American when I was recruiting her.  For her to accomplish that is very exciting.”
