AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sprinter Kendra White has made the most of her first season with the Cyclone track and field program and will be among 24 student-athletes headed to Austin, Texas to compete in the NCAA West Regional Thursday through Saturday.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., White originally attended LSU but transferred last season after deciding Iowa State was a better fit for her.

White has achieved success in her young collegiate career, racing to a trio of top-three finishes in the 400-meter dash this season. She attributes a lot of her success to her training, which is very similar to the training regimen she practiced in high school.

“I trust my training,” White said. “I know that coach has my best interests at heart, and my teammates are great training partners.”

At 53.83 seconds, White’s 400-meter time stands 33rd in the field at the Austin Regional, but Iowa State sprints coach Nate Wiens knows there is more in the tank for the young runner and is working to make get the most out of her talents leading up to her race. Recently, Wiens has been working with White on her finish.

“We’re lining up her training here in the last month to where she really understands it,” Wiens said. “She understands the workouts and knows how it’s supposed to feel, so she can push a little harder. She’s thriving and moving forward.”

Wiens has strong faith in White’s ability and sees the potential for her to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships, June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

White will compete in the West Regional 400-meter dash prelims Thursday The sophomore will also compete Friday as part of the Iowa State 4x400-meter relay team.

“She has every shot in the world if she goes out and executes,” Wiens said. “Sometimes, she just needs to turn the brain off, turn the body on and just go. It’s one of those things where we’re fit. We’re fast. Let’s go race.”
