Capped Iowa State career with a 39-0 record and a national championship at 174 pounds…won 27 of his 39 matches by bonus point margins…became Big 12 champion for the first time in his career with a 14-3 major decision over Oklahoma State’s Mike Benefiel, and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the Big 12 coaches…opened the season with a championship at the Hokie Open, with two technical falls and two falls…followed that up with four straight bonus-point victories en route to a title at the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open…defeated eventual All-Americans Mike Letts of Maryland and Ben Bennett of Central Michigan on his way to his first Midlands title…defeated Cornell’s three-time All-American Mack Lewnes by a score of 7-6 in a dual at Cornell…defeated both of his opponents in the Big 12 Championships by major decision…earned two straight major decisions in the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships…defeated Mike Letts once again in the quarterfinals by a score of 8-2…advanced to the finals with a 4-3 victory over Virginia three-time All-American Chris Henrich…rolled to a 10-3 victory in his final career match over Stanford’s Nick Amuchastegui to become the 48th Cyclone to win an NCAA title in the program’s storied history.
