Cyclones Earn AVCA Team Academic Award
More from Cyclones.tv
This year marked the third consecutive time the Cyclones have earned the honor. Iowa State, who finished No. 14 in the country last season, was one of only four Division I programs to finish ranked in the top-20 of the final AVCA coaches pool and earn the Team Academic Award. Florida, Louisville and Stanford were the other programs to accomplish the feat.
It was a literal team effort by the Cyclones. Iowa State had six student-athletes named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 squad. Three of those six, Kristen Hahn, Alison Landwehr and Jamie Straube were all named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District teams. The underclassmen also pulled their weight as four freshmen were named to the Big 12’s inaugural All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
To be eligible for the AVCA Team Academic Award, a team must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA throughout the school year.
Iowa State will hold the annual Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to come early as Christy Johnson-Lynch and the Cyclone coaching staff will be hosting “Chalk Talk”. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. in Hilton Coliseum and is an opportunity for fans to learn about the rules and strategies of volleyball and ask questions to the Iowa State coaching staff.
Iowa State’s regular season will begin in Grand Forks, N.D. at the UND Classic against South Dakota State on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m.
