AMES, Iowa – The real Alec Baldwin, not the actor but the four-time Iowa prep track and field champion from Spirit Lake-Park has signed a national letter of intent to compete at Iowa State. Baldwin boasts prep personal bests of 1:55.34 for 800 meters and 4:14 for 1600 meters.
“Alec had the kind of senior year that demonstrated he has the potential to become another Iowa native who has excelled at Iowa State,” Cyclone head track and cross country coach Corey Ihmels said. “I am really excited that he is a competitor who was at his best in the biggest races.”
As a senior, Baldwin led a 1-2-3 finish for the Indians’ cross country as Spirit Lake-Park finished second in Class 2-A as a team. He was second as a junior and third as a sophomore. Spirit Lake-Park was the state team 2-A champion in 2008 and 2009. At the 2011 Drake Relays, Baldwin won 1600-meter run in 4:14 and had a 1:52 leg on the runner-up 4 x 800 unit.
Baldwin went out in fine fashion in his final state meet in May. He ran an opening leg of 1:52.7 on Spirit Lake-Park’s 4 x 800-meter relay team that went on to victory in Class 3-A to snap a 31-year old meet record. Baldwin also ran on the victorious distance medley and raced to victory in the Class 3-A 800 meter run. He was the state runner up in the 1600 meters.
