Spangler, Ward Return; Iowa State Falls to Oregon State
AMES, Iowa - The No. 13 Iowa State wrestling team won three of the last five matches against No. 19 Oregon State in the semifinals of the NWCA Duals Midwest Regional Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones fell 27-12 to the Beavers and are 4-13 overall this season. Iowa State won its first-round match 36-3 earlier in the afternoon. Iowa won the meet title, beating Oregon State, 22-14.
"We were glad Chris Spangler (174) and Jerome Ward (197) were back on the mat," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "I was disapointed that we gave up some bonus points against Oregon State. But now we must get ready for March."
Luke Goettl (141) and Spangler wrestled against Wisconsin but not against Oregon State.
Redshirt senior Andrew Sorenson sparked the Cyclone upper weights with an 8-3 decision over Oregon State's Joe Latham. With the victory, Sorenson has now earned 90 wins in his Iowa State career.
Redshirt sophomore Boaz Beard continued his winning ways with an 11-5 decision over Bryan Engdahl. Beard improves to 8-4 overall this season.
At 197 pounds, redshirt senior Ward took the mat for the first time all season. Ward posted a 11-7 decision over Beaver grappler Taylor Meeks, ranked 17th nationally. Meeks had previously dropped only two dual matches.
The Big 12 Championships are March 3 in Columbia, Mo.
