Cyclone senior outside hitter Rachel Hockaday is headed to Huntington Beach, Calif. this summer to work with Fellowship of Christian Athletes Volleyball. Throughout the summer, Hockaday will blog about her time with FCAV, giving Iowa State fans an inside look at one student-athlete's summer plans.
The days are long here, but the weeks are flying by. We’ve been extremely busy training as well as working camps at different middles schools and high schools in the area. I’ve worked a lot of volleyball camps in the past but none have affected me as much as these have. It is amazing what can happen when you incorporate Jesus and volleyball in the same gym. One of the main themes for FCAV is doing life WITH God and pursuing excellence with Him. It is so humbling to pour into these girls and teach them what that looks like. I’m still learning myself, but it amazes me to see the way these girls are impacted and look at the way the staff here loves and serves.
At each of the camps we have speakers come in and talk to the campers. The past two camps we’ve had a player from either the men’s or women’s US National Volleyball team come and speak. Players at the absolute highest level realize their need for a day-to-day relationship with God and know they can’t play volleyball or live life without Him. It has been so encouraging to see the way they incorporate God into their sport. I continue to learn each day I’m here; I’m being pushed every single day both mentally and physically. The work that we are doing here is long and hard, but it’s some of the most rewarding work I’ve ever been a part of.
I miss my teammates in Ames so much!! Hope you all are doing well- can’t wait to be back home with you guys!
