Cyclones defeat West Virginia, 5-2
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- The Iowa State tennis team (9-13, 1-8 Big 12) earned a 5-2 win against West Virginia (3-17, 0-9 Big 12) today in Morgantown to finish out the Big 12 season. It was the Cyclones' second win against the Mountaineers in as many seasons.
The Cyclones claimed the doubles point against the Mountaineers with a win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Meghan Cassens paired up with sophomore Ana Gasparovic in the last regular-season dual to take down Vivian Tsui and Irinka Toidze, 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, Lydia Green and Caroline Andersen won by default.
In singles play, freshman Samantha Budai earned the win over Kaja Mrgole at the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 6-2, to keep ISU in the lead by three after a default from West Virginia at No. 6. Cassens took the match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, clinching the Cyclones’ first Big 12 win of the season.
Gasparovic got another third-set win to finish the regular season, taking down Irinka Toidze, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
The Cyclones will head to Fort Worth April 24-27 for the Big 12 tournament.
