AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State track and field teams are sending a group of 21 student-athletes to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the 2014 NCAA West Prelims. The Cyclones will be looking to punch their tickets to Eugene, Oregon, to compete in the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Three Cyclone student-athletes enter the regional meet with top-five qualifying marks in Edward Kemboi, Christina Hillman and Ese Okoro. Kemboi holds the region’s top time in the 800-meter run at 1 minute, 46.14 seconds, setting the mark early in the year at the Mt. SAC Relays. Kemboi’s outdoor best in the event stands at 1:46.06, while also clocking in at 1:45.98 this past indoor season. He and Arkansas’ Patrick Rono are the lone two runners to run sub-1:47 entering the regional.

Hillman will start shot-put competition ranked No. 3 in the region. The Dover, Delaware, native posted her best mark of the outdoor season at the Big 12 Championships, throwing a distance of 57’08.50” to capture the conference title. Hillman will see top competition from a Missouri Tiger duo in Kearsten Peoples and Jill Rushin, as well as Arizona’s Julie Labonte. Hillman, Peoples, Rushin and Labonte are the only four throwers in the region to break the 57-foot barrier in 2014.

Both Hillman and Kemboi are Iowa State program record holders in their respective events.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Ese Okoro comes in with the No. 4 overall performance in 2014, clocking a time of 56.78 seconds at the LSU Tiger Classic. Okoro is one of five hurdlers in the region to run sub-57 this season and the only to post five sub-58 second performances this season. At 56.78, Okoro ranks fourth in program history in the event.

Ese’s twin sister, Ejiro will be looking to book her trip to the NCAA championships in the 800-meter run. Ejiro clocked 2:04.49 earlier this season at the Payton Jordan Invitational and is fresh off of a conference title-winning performance at the Big 12 Championships. The Birmingham, England, native enters competition ranked No. 9 in the region in the event.

The Cyclone women will be packing the 5,000-meter run, as they did at the conference championships. Iowa State will have five runners in the field, as Samantha Bluske, Bethanie Brown, Katy Moen, Crystal Nelson and Perez Rotich all posted qualifying marks. Nelson (No. 12) and Moen (No. 15) will lead the pack for the Cyclones, each breaking the 16-minute barrier this season. Nelson, Moen and Brown each rank in the program’s top-10 in the event, ranking No. 3, No. 6 and No. 9, respectively.

Bluske and Moen will also tackle the 10,000-meter run. The race will mark their third 10K of the year, and both are coming off of all-conference performances at the Big 12 Championships (Moen - 1st, Bluske - 5th). The duo rank No. 7 and No. 10 on the program’s all-time list in the event.

Competitors must place in the top-12 at the regional prelims to qualify for the national championships. The top-12 relay squads in each event will also qualify.
