ISU Pins Bloomsburg to Advance at National Duals, 38-7
CEDAR FALL, Iowa – The No. 2-ranked Iowa State wrestling team advanced in the first round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals over Bloomsburg 38-7. Four Cyclones pinned their opponents in the UNI-Dome. The fastest fall came from Iowa State 165-pounder Jon Reader in 48 seconds. ISU picked up bonus-point victories in six of its eight victories over the Huskies. The Cyclones move forward to take on seventh-seeded Maryland at 3 p.m. The Terps advanced with a 39-3 dual victory over host Northern Iowa.
Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson liked what he saw with the Cyclones’ offensive attack.
“We always want to score a lot of points and work towards bonus points,” Jackson said. “The difference will be whether we can do that consistently. Maryland is a tough opponent. We are going to shoot for the same kind of performance.”
Cyclone momentum got rolling early for Iowa State with redshirt freshman standout Andrew Long scoring a victory by fall at 125 pounds. Long ran the match score to 14-3 against Bloomsburg’s James Bak before turning him for the pin in 5:41.
Reader, a junior two-time All-American who is ranked third at 165 pounds, needed only one takedown to turn the tide against No. 11 Rick Schmelyun of Bloomsburg. Reader, a Davison, Mich., native, put his BU opponent directly on his back and notched the pin at the 0:48 mark.
Three-time NCAA finalist Jake Varner rolled up his Bloomsburg opponent, Brian Shaw, in the first period to win by fall in 1:30. The fall was Varner’s eighth pin of the season.
The Iowa State back-up at 141 pounds couldn’t be denied a pin. Cyclone Dalton Jensen stuck BU’s Joe McAuley in 3:53 to record his second fall of the season in dual action.
Cyclone 133-pounder Nick Fanthorpe followed the pin at 125 pounds with bonus points against the Huskies’ Jason Guffey. The senior All-American turned away Guffey by major decision, 16-5.
Another Iowa State major decision came by way of the 184-pound match. ISU’s Jerome Ward turned on the offense to beat Derek Coffey of Bloomsburg by a score of 14-3.
Recording decisions for the Cyclones were Mitch Mueller (149) and Kyle Simonson (HWT). Mueller needed overtime to takedown Bloomsburg’s Josh Roosa, 7-5 (SV). Simonson, filling in for regular starter David Zabriskie, controlled his bout with Zac Walsh of Bloomsburg en route to a 7-2 decision.
ISU’s Nate Carr, Jr. got the nod at 157 pounds but fell to Bloomsburg’s ninth-ranked Matt Moley by major decision, 19-6. Cyclone redshirt freshman Chris Spangler made the first dual start of his career, but came up short to Nate Graham of Bloomsburg by decision, 4-2.
