Maria Akraka was a four-time All-American in track and field and cross country during her time at Iowa State from 1987-89. A native of Norrtalje, Sweden, she possessed a unique blend of ability by earning All-America honors in middle distance in track and field and in cross country.

- Four-time All-American (1987 & 1988)
- Two-time Big Eight Champion in the 800-meter run (1987 & 1988)
- Finished seventh in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 1987 and 1988
- A part of ISU’s 4X800-meter relay which finished fourth at the 1987 NCAA Indoor Championships in 1987
- Has the second-best times in ISU history in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter runs
- Held national Swedish records in the 800m, 1000m and the 1500m
- Competed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona
- Member of four World Track and Field Championship teams for Sweden
- Reached the finals of the 800m and 1500m at the 1994 European Track and Field Championships
