AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team put on a strong showing for the crowd Thursday at Ames High School for Cyclone wrestling supporters. Many true freshmen put forward a good performance, but it was the returning wrestlers who stole the show.

Coach Jackson was impressed by the way that the young wrestlers performed in front of the fans.

“I think that of course the young kids could have performed better in a few areas,” Jackson said. “But I was impressed by the intensity that they brought. They wrestled hard and they were eager and excited to wrestle in front of the fans for their first time in a Cyclone singlet.”

Kyle Slifka put on a great performance in his first appearance since switching from football to wrestling. Slifka scored a quick takedown and three near-fall points and never looked back in a 14-4 win over true freshman Dakota Tennant.

RJ Hallman came out on top in an exciting match with fellow true freshman Scott Moody. Hallman tallied seven takedowns in a 19-7 victory.

Ryak Finch did not disappoint in his much anticipated debut, with a 8-1 win over JUCO national champion Patrick Hunter at 125 pounds. Finch earned four near-fall points in the second period on his way to racking up well over two minutes of riding time.

True freshman Luke Goettl kept the momentum going with a 9-1 major decision over redshirt freshman Ben Cash at 133 pounds. Goettl had three takedowns and 2:38 of riding time in a dominating performance.

In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the night, Nate Carr Jr. looked sharp in a 149-pound 5-2 victory over redshirt sophomore Max Mayfield. Mayfield came out quickly but could not score any points in the first period, and Carr imposed his will in the next two periods.

“Nate Carr looked great tonight,” Jackson said. “He has made a big cut and Max is a very tough opponent. He has put himself in a great position to be our starter at 149 pounds.”

In a match-up between two tough true freshman, Matt Riley tallied four takedowns in a 12-2 major decision over Trevor Voelker.

Trent Weatherman showed why so many Cyclone fans can not wait for him to take the mat this year at 165 pounds. Weatherman took down and pinned freshman Mike England in the first period with a very impressive throw.

Tyler Christensen got the better of Cole Shafer in a battle between two redshirt freshman at 184 pounds. Christensen amassed nearly two minutes of riding time in a 6-0 victory.

As a special event to prepare senior Jon Reader for the World University Championships in Torino, Italy, there was a 174-pound freestyle match between Reader and redshirt sophomore Chris Spangler. Reader controlled the action and earned a hard fought 3-0, 3-1 victory.

“I think it is tough to come out in this environment and wrestle like you would in the World Championships,” Jackson said. “I think his mind is in Italy, but he did enough to win. I would have liked him to get his offense going a little more and work harder to turn. I thought Chris Spangler did a great job competing at a very high level against Jon. Reader has been getting the best of him, but this time he was right there with him.”

The final match of the night may have been the most anticipated. Junior college transfer heavyweight Matt Gibson came out on top in a close match with Kyle Simonson. Gibson came out quickly and jumped on top 4-0, and held off a Simonson rally to win 6-3.

“Matt Gibson did a good job against Kyle Simonson,” Jackson said. “Kyle got the best of him in practice the other day, so I think that it surprised us a little bit how Matt game out firing on all cylinders. It was a good match between two quality heavyweights.”

Iowa State begins their 2010-11 dual schedule in Salem, Va., Nov. 6.
