Since 1994, NACDA has recognized the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the United States based upon national championship finishes. Iowa State's most recent ranking is one of its best in the history of the Directors' Cup. Three years ago, the Cyclones registered their all-time best finish (34th).
One of the athletics department's annual goals is to finish among the nation's top-50 in the season-ending standings. Mission accomplished.
"The Cyclones had another outstanding year competitively," Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "The credit goes to the student-athletes and coaches who work hard every day to reach their potentials as teams and individuals."
A school-record 12 Iowa State sport teams accumulated points in this year's standings (women's cross country, football, volleyball, women's basketball, men's basketball, women's gymnastics, women's indoor track & field, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, women's golf and men's golf), eclipsing the old mark of 11 set in 1996 and 2010.
Iowa State had the sixth-best finish among schools from the Big 12 Conference.
