AMES, Iowa – Cyclone pair Meghan Cassens and Jenna Langhorst captured a doubles bracket title this afternoon at the Kansas Fall Invitational. The duo outperformed opponents from UMKC and Northern Iowa to win the team’s first tournament title of the season.

Cassens, a sophomore, and Langhorst, a senior, nabbed their third win as a pair over UMKC’s Laura Bouet and Dimitria Starianakou, 8-6. The Iowa State student-athletes then advanced to the final round and were paired against Abby Walker and Krissy Lanklema from UNI. The Cyclones maintained an exciting lead to capture the doubles bracket title, overpowering the Panthers 8-6.

“Meghan and Jenna did a terrific job against some great pairs, and I’m very happy with how they played,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “They were really energized today and I felt that they performed at a really high level.”

Cassens advanced to the semifinal round in singles competition after she defeated Carmen Borau of Kansas State, controlling the three-set matchup 6-3, 3-6, 10-3. In the finals, the Iowa State sophomore played an impressive set against Northern Iowa’s Phoebe Walker, but dropped the match 6-3, 6-3.

“Meghan did a great job all weekend,” Espinosa said. “She really stepped up her game against a lot of great competition and held her own.”

At the ITA Regional Championships tournament in Tulsa, Okla., Simona Cacciuttolo and Ksenia Pronina continued on in the consolation bracket. Pronina, an Iowa State sophomore, fell to Oklahoma’s Mia Lancaster 7-6 (4), 6-0 this afternoon. Cacciuttolo also suffered a loss at the hands of Kansas State’s Ivana Kubicova, 6-2, 6-1. Today’s losses marked the end of Iowa State’s competition in the Regional Championships.

The squad will be back in action at the Cougar Fall Draw in Houston, Texas on November 2.
