Malloy, Knuth Spark Cyclones In Sweep Of Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas – Andie Malloy and Taylor Knuth came off the bench Saturday to help No. 22 Iowa State (13-7, 7-3 Big 12) to a sweep of TCU (13-9, 2-7 Big 12), 25-16, 27-25, 25-17.
Iowa State trailed the Horned Frogs, 3-10, early in the second set before tying the score, 15-15. As TCU pulled ahead again, Malloy entered the match, picking up kills to tie the score at 22 and again at 23 and giving the Cyclones a third set point, leading 25-24. The freshman ended the day with six kills and two digs.
Senior Taylor Knuth came to life in the third set, recording three kills on seven attempts, grabbing a dig and her first solo block of the season as Iowa State put away its sixth sweep of 2012.
Victoria Hurtt led the Cyclones in kills for the fifth-straight match, notching 15 on the day, ahead of Jamie Straube’s 12 kills. Five Cyclones recorded double-digit digs, led by Kristen Hahn and Jenelle Hudson’s 14 digs apiece. Caitlin Nolan (11), Rachel Hockaday (10) and Alison Landwehr (10), rounded out the double-digit dig performances.
Landwehr had a career day behind the service line with four aces and added 42 digs and a block assist in the contest.
In game one, an error by the Frogs gave Iowa State the first back-to-back points for either team in the match, with the Cyclones taking a 6-4 lead. Iowa State pulled away, taking a 21-12 lead and, although TCU saved three set points, they could not recover and the Cyclones too the 1-0 lead. Straube and Hurtt each led the teams with five kills in the opening game.
Malloy gave the Cyclones new life with four kills late in the second set as the visitors rallied to take a 2-0 lead. Tenisha Matlock eventually put away the win for Iowa State with a cross-court kill, her sixth kill of the day.
Iowa State closed out the win with three blocks in the final set while out-hitting the Frogs, .171-.031.
Taking a break from Big 12 play, the Cyclones travel to South Dakota State on Tuesday, Oct. 30, for a 7 p.m. CST non-conference contest.
