Cyclones Hit The Road To Battle West Virgnia

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State wrestling team heads east to Morgantown, W. Va. to face West Virginia for the first time ever in Big 12 competition on the mat. Wrestling begins Saturday at 2 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.

"There's definitely a lot of excitement surrounding the dual," head coach Kevin Jackson said. "Just having the opportunity to wrestle again is exciting enough for our guys. We have a chance to go out there and show all the hard work we've been putting in since our East Coast swing. We can't wait for the match, and we look forward to continuing our growth and maturity."

Cyclone Notebook

- Iowa State is currently on a three-dual win streak, as they swept an East Coast road trip Jan. 11-Jan. 13 picking up three dual wins over Rutgers, Drexel and No. 20 Penn.

- Michael Moreno went 3-0 on the road trip to extend his team lead in wins to 17. Moreno, ranked No. 19 in the latest InterMat poll, won two of his three matches out east by way of major decision.

- Kyven Gadson cracked the top ten in the national rankings, as he is slotted at No. 9 at 197 pounds by InterMat. While out east, Gadson went 2-0, highlighted by a 3-1 sudden victory win over then No. 7 Micah Burak of Penn.

- Redshirt sophomore Tanner Weatherman cracked the rankings for the first time in his career as a Cyclone, as he is listed as the No. 20 174-pounder in the country by InterMat this week. Weatherman went 2-0 on the East Coast swing with a 9-7 overtime win over No. 12 Greg Zannetti of Rutgers and a pin (2:32) over Penn's Harrison Cook.

- True freshman John Meeks went 2-1 on the East Coast road trip Jan. 11 - Jan. 13. Meeks dropped a 7-6 decision to Vincent Dellefave of Rutgers, but he was able to bounce back on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. The Des Moines, Iowa native went 2-0 defeating Clayton Lutzow of Drexel 15-5 and Geoffrey Bostany of Penn 8-5. The win over Lutzow marked the first career dual win and first career bonus point win for the highly touted freshman in a Cyclone singlet.

Scouting West Virginia

- West Virginia is fresh off its first two Big 12 duals in school history. They were defeated 36-3 by Oklahoma State on Jan. 18 in Stillwater and 25-14 by Oklahoma on Jan. 20 in Norman.

- The Mountaineers have one wrestler ranked in the top-20 of the current national rankings. Nathan Pennesi, a junior from Latrobe, Pa., is ranked No. 14 nationally at 141 pounds by InterMat. Pennesi is a two-time NCAA qualifier and is 17-7 on the year.

- West Virgina's line-up is lead by two seniors, 125-pounder Shane Young and heavyweight Phil Mandzik. Young is 7-2 on the year, while Mandzik sports an 8-11 overall record.

- West Virgnia will face Rutgers on Friday night in Morgantown before facing the Cyclones Saturday. Iowa State defeated Rutgers 19-15 back on Jan. 11 in Piscataway, N.J.

Series Notes

- The dual marks the 12th meeting all-time between the two schools. Iowa State leads the all-time series 10-1. Iowa State's last trip to Morgantown was on Jan. 4, 2003. The dual was the Cyclones' lone loss in the series, as the Mountaineers were victorious 22-14.

- The last meeting between the two schools was on Nov. 18, 2007 in Binghamton, N.Y., which Iowa State won by a final tally of 24-9. Volunteer assistant coach Jon Reader wrestled in the dual, scoring a 19-1 technical fall win (5:10) over West Virginia's Donnie Jones at 165 pounds.
