AMES, Iowa – ¬Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) opened its 2013 season with a bang, collecting a run for every hit in its 11-1 five-inning win over North Dakota (1-1, 0-0 Big Sky). Sophomores Jorden Spendlove and Lexi Slater were each 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI on the night.

Senior Tori Torrescano (1-0) was nails in the circle, pitching a no-hitter through four innings before Brittany Baker doubled to lead off the fifth inning. UND scored its lone run in the final frame on a RBI single by Hannah Tometich.

Abby Joe Tometich (0-1) took the loss for North Dakota.

The Cyclones wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first as Sarah Hawryluk came around to score as UND attempted to run down Brittany Gomez between first and second. Gomez slid safely back into first ahead of the throw as Hawryluk’s foot touched home plate for the 1-0 lead.

Three batters later, Slater doubled home Gomez to extend the score to 2-0 with one out in the frame. Hally Lenzine followed a Maddie Reese strikeout with a single to left, driving home Torrescano. Slater moved to third on the hit and came around to score on an error by the UND left fielder, putting Iowa State up 4-0 heading into the second inning.

A walk to Torrescano loaded the bases for Slater in the top of the second. Slater singled to the right side, plating two more runs, and a single to the left side by Spendlove put the Cyclones up 7-0 with one out in the inning. Iowa State put up two more runs, making the score 9-0 in favor of the home team after two innings.

Spendlove continued her scoring night in the third, driving in two more runs on a double and stretching the lead to 11-0.

North Dakota retired the leadoff batter for the first time on the night in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting Lenzine to ground out to second base.

The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, facing South Dakota State at 1 p.m. CST followed by IFPW at 3:30 p.m.
