AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (5-8, 0-2 Big 12) forced three matches to go to a third set but was unable to earn a team point, falling 6-0 to No. 27 TCU (10-1, 2-0 Big 12) Sunday morning at Ames Racquet and Fitness.
In a rare event, the Cyclones and Horned Frogs started play with singles. TCU’s Millie Nichols opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Iowa State’s Ana Gasparovic. Simona Cacciuttolo also fell 6-3, 6-3 to the nation’s No. 65 player, TCU’s Stefanie Tan.
Cyclone sophomore Ksenia Pronina nearly battled back to force a third set before succumbing to No. 79 Olivia Smith, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 5 singles slot, Emma Waites took the first set but was unable to fend off TCU’s Kelsey Sundaram. Waites dropped the three-setter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-7 (4).
The final singles match of the day featured Iowa State’s Caroline Andersen against TCU’s Monika Sirilova. Andersen rolled to a 6-4 first-set win before dropping the final two sets.
With the match decided after singles play was completed, both coaches decided against playing doubles.
The Cyclones will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to UMKC. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
