Alex Gustafson Joins Iowa State's Cardinal Key Club

AMES, Iowa- Iowa State swimmer Alex Gustafson continues to prove in the highest way that she is an all-around student-athlete, inducted this season to Iowa State’s prestigious Cardinal Key club.

The Cardinal Key was founded in 1926 to recognize outstanding leaders at Iowa State University. Only those will the following qualities are elected to the club. Nominees must have strong leadership activities while at Iowa State University and great service contributions to the community as well as the university. Applicants also must have scholarship achievements of high academic societies and academic scholarships as well as outstanding character.

Applicants must be a junior or senior standing as well as maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

“This is quite a prestigious award, being named one of the top leaders at Iowa State University,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Ever since she has been a freshman, [Alex] has been a leader, will share what she thinks and does a nice job just helping others become better, as well as herself.”

Gustafson is a native of Waukee, Iowa and recently was named a team captain for the 2013-14 season. She took 18th in the 200 freestyle and 23rd in the 500 freestyle at the Big 12Championship meet and was fifth on the year in the 500 and 1000 freestyle for the Cyclones.
