No.4 Moreno Falls To No. 1 Taylor In All-Star Meet
FAIRFAX, Va. – All-American Michael Moreno was unable to capitalize offensively Saturday night, as he fell 13-2 to No. 1 David Taylor in the 165-pound matchup at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic.
Taylor got on the board early and did not turn back, as he rode Moreno for the majority of the first and second period.
In the final period, Moreno impressed as he successfully rode Taylor to trim away his riding time. Taylor was able to slip out on the edge with 12 seconds remaining in the match to score a late reversal to extend his lead to 12-2.
Riding from the top position was something stressed in Moreno’s wrestling late in the season last year. Assistant coach Travis Paulson was able to successfully implement the tactics into Moreno’s arsenal, something that undoubtedly helped the redshirt junior find a spot on the podium at the NCAA Championships. His ride ability showed in the third period tonight vs. Taylor.
Moreno, who is currently ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds in the latest InterMat poll, is poised for successful run in 2013-14, as he and All-American Kyven Gadson lead the team into competition this week.
Iowa State kicks off the season Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum with a double dual against Drexel and Grand View. The Cyclones’ dual with Drexel begins at 5:30 p.m. (CST), with the Grand View dual following shortly after.
