Grove-McDonough Named Big 12 Women's Coach Of The Year
IRVING, Texas – Iowa State women’s cross country head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough was named as the 2013 Big 12 Women’s Coach of the Year, the league off ice announced this afternoon. Oklahoma State’s Dave Smith was the conference men’s coach of the year. Grove-McDonough and Smith were selected by the league’s coaches.
Grove-McDonough led the Cyclone women to their third consecutive Big 12 title in her first year as head coach, with her squad winning the race by 69 points in a dominating performance. The 69-point deficit is the second-largest margin of victory in Big 12 history. Five runners earned All-Big 12 recognition under Grove-McDonough’s tutelage in Crystal Nelson, Katy Moen, Bethanie Brown, Perez Rotich and Ejiro Okoro. Brown also garnered Big 12 Newcomer of the Year as the race’s top-finishing newcomer.
The Iowa State women are currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and boast the No. 1 ranking in the Midwest region in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) polls. The Cyclones have captured three consecutive Midwest Region titles and look to make it four when Iowa State hosts the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship on Nov. 15.
