CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three Iowa State grapplers advanced to the quarterfinals New Year’s Day at McKenzie Arena, as Iowa State sits in fifth-place in the team standings with 39.5 points at the 2014 Southern Scuffle.

Iowa State All-American Kyven Gadson led the way, going 3-0 with two pins. In the first two rounds Gadson pinned Cleveland State’s Raymone Stone and Appalachian State’s Kacee Hutchison.

Gadson, a Waterloo, Iowa, native punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Air Force’s Robert Isley. Gadson is the No. 2 seed at 197 pounds and will face Drexel’s Brandon Palik in the morning. He beat Palik 7-6 in ISU’s dual win over Drexel back on Nov. 7.

Gadson hit a career milestone Wednesday, tallying his 40th career victory. His career record at Iowa State sits at 42-7.

No. 14 Tanner Weatherman had three come from behind wins at 174 pounds today en route to his quarterfinal berth. In his first match, Weatherman trailed Missouri’s Cody Johnston 6-0 heading into the third period. He scored 13 points in the final stanza en route to a 13-10 win.

The Huxley, Iowa, native then downed Appalachian State’s Collin Hedash 7-5 in the first sudden victory period after trailing 5-2 late in the match. In his round of 16 match, Weatherman came from behind yet again to down Oklahoma State’s Kyle Crutchmer 9-5 in the second tiebreak period.

Redshirt freshman Lelund Weatherspoon was the third Cyclone quarterfinalist, as he downed Missouri’s Mikey England 4-2 with 1:02 of riding time in the round of 16 at 174 pounds. England wrestled at Iowa State for three seasons before transferring to Missouri this year.

Weatherspoon, a Jackson, Mich., native, picked up a first period pin over Campbell’s Cody Ryba and a 6-0 win over Navy’s Johnny Watson in his first two matches.

Four More Cyclone wrestlers did battle tonight in the round of 16 in Earl Hall (125), John Nicholson (157), Michael Moreno (165) and Boaz Beard (184).

Hall was unable to get his explosive offense going, as he fell to 2013 Big 12 champion Eddie Klimara 9-1. The Homestead, Fla., native finished the day 2-1, picking up a 12-5 win over Vito Pasone of Appalachian State and a pin in 3:32 over South Dakota State’s Ben Gillete.

Nicholson dropped an 8-5 decision to All-American R.J. Pena of Oregon State in the round of 16. He picked up two wins in rounds 1 and 2, downing Logan Kerin of Bucknell 9-2 in his first match and UT-Chattanooga’s Alex Hudson 6-4 in the first sudden victory period.

Beard suffered his first loss of the season, as he fell 6-3 in the round of 16 to Minnesota’s Kevin Pffar. He finished the day 1-1, snagging an 11-0 major decision over Stanford’s Michael Sojka.

Navy’s Peyton Walsh upset Moreno in the round of 16, as the Cyclone fell 3-1. Moreno, a 2013 All-American, finished the day 2-1, earning a pin in his opening match over The Citadel’s Kenneth Radford and a 6-2 decision over Minnesota’s Alec Ortiz.
