Cyclone Swimming Winter Training Daily Blog
Hello Cyclone swimming family, friends, and fans.
Our fourth day of training here in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. greeted us with some unpleasant weather conditions. Looking out of the hotel window, the palm trees on the beach were blowing like crazy, and the Atlantic waves were the biggest I have seen since we arrived at the Windjammer. The cyclone-like winds did not stop us from loading the vans at 9:30 a.m.
In order to limber up, Emily Wiltsie led a team stretch, but due to the rain, our team stretch was forced to move under the balcony. Practice was divided into five groups: distance, middle distance, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. All groups had great practices consisting of drills and kicking. The distance swimmers had a challenging morning workout, with their main set consisting of forty 100 freestyles on 1:10.
After morning practice, we all departed to our Windjammer rooms and made lunch. Nothing beats a hardy lunch after a great workout.
Because the sun was not shining and the temperature all day was in the low sixties, many of the girls took naps and/or watched television.
Some of us decided to delay the nap. Katie Vollhaber, Ali Stearns, Emily Wiltsie, Kaylee Kucera, Karyl Clarete, and I played a couple of rounds of the classic card game, Uno. A little while later, Karyl and Elizabeth Kleiner got their swim suits on and played in the ocean. The waves were still huge, which is why they had a blast riding the waves. Both of them noted the ocean was much colder than they expected.
At 5 p.m. the team loaded the vans once again to head to Pine Crest. This evening, weights were included in our training. After three rounds of lunges, dumbbell bench press, Cuban presses, and planks, we were ready to begin our long course night swim practice.
The team was not divided into groups. Instead, we all practiced together and took on the main set, which was a timed kick set. High winds and rain made conditions rough, but our positive team energy kept us going.
After night practice, we rushed back to the Windjammer to enjoy our dinners. Common meals include pasta, eggs, or tacos. Since practice is done for the day, it is now time to relax and rest up for the fifth day of training.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring us some sunshine. Goodnight Cyclone Nation.
