Iowa State Hits Road To Battle ASU Saturday

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (7-3 overall, 1-2 Big 12) is bound for warmer weather this weekend, as it heads southwest to take on Arizona State (6-5 overall, 1-0 Pac 12) in Tempe. The Cyclones will look to extend a nine match dual win streak over the Sun Devils that dates back to Nov. 24, 2004.

When: Saturday, Feb. 1, 9 p.m. CDT

Cyclone Notebook


- All-American Kyven Gadson will be putting a 24-match dual win streak on the line. He is 24-0 in duals the last two seasons. 
- Gadson is the consensus No. 2 wrestler at 197 pounds in all the national rankings for the third consecutive week.
- No. 10 Michael Moreno leads the team in dual takedowns with 23 and is second in wins with 19.
- Boaz Beard is back in the lineup at 184 pounds for the Cyclones. Beard will face No. 18 Blake Stauffer on Saturday evening.
- Beard is fresh off a Grand View Open title after going 5-0 with two pins and two major decisions. Beard picked up four wins over Division I opponents in the tournament to help boost his RPI and win percentage against Division I competition.  
- Head coach Kevin Jackson is seeking his 50th career dual win this season and will look to inch closer Friday night. Jackson’s career record sits at 44-33. 
- Iowa State remained at18th in the latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll with 237 points. The Cyclones have three duals remaining this season against top-10 opponents: at No. 9 Oklahoma State (Jan. 24), at No. 5 Northern Iowa (Feb. 7) and No. 4 Minnesota (Feb. 23). Click here to view the complete coaches poll. 
- Iowa State will be on the road for the remainder of year until its season finale on Feb. 23 with No. 4 Minnesota.

Last Time Out
- Iowa State was victorious in just one match, as No. 9 Oklahoma State handed ISU its first road loss of the season 29-3.
- The Cyclones lost two matches in overtime and two matches that came down to the wire in regulation.
- Kyven Gadson picked up his 24th straight dual win, downing OSU’s Kyle Crutchmer 3-1. The win pushed Gadson’s overall record this season to 17-2 and his dual record to 9-0.
- No. 10 Tanner Weatherman fell 6-4 to No. 2 Chris Perry, but had a strong showing against the 2013 174-pound NCAA champion. Weatherman scored two takedowns in the match, marking the first offensive points he’s scored against Perry in four career matches.

Scouting Arizona State
- 
The Sun Devils are fresh off a 21-15 conference win over Pac-12 foe Boise State. The win pushed ASU passed the .500 mark overall as they improved to 6-5 in duals this season.
- ASU beat Old Dominion 21-15 at the Virginia Duals back on Jan. 11. The Sun Devils split matches with the Monarchs, but prevailed behind pins at 125 pounds and 157 pounds.
- Blake Stauffer is the lone ranked wrestler in ASU’s lineup. He’s No. 18 at 184 pounds in AWN’s latest individual poll.
- Stauffer went 22-5 last season and qualified for the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships at 174 pounds. He brings a 15-7 record into Saturday night’s contest.
- Sophomore Ray Waters will be wrestling for ASU at 174 pounds in place of injured Sun Devil Kevin Radford.

-Iowa State leads the all-time series with Arizona State 26-6.
-The Cyclones have won nine straight over the Sun Devils dating back to Nov. 24, 2004.
-ISU’s average margin of victory in the streak is 16.2 points.
-The last time Iowa State wrestled at Wells Fargo Arena, it downed Arizona State 25-14.
-Head coach Kevin Jackson is 4-0 all-time vs. Arizona State.
