Cyclone Notes
  • Iowa State will look to continue one of its better starts in school history this weekend at the Marriott Bronco Classic in Santa Clara, Calif.
  • The Cyclones will start the tournament Friday against Santa Clara, followed by a Saturday doubleheader against San Diego and Sacramento State and closing out the tournament with a doubleheader against Santa Clara and San Diego.
  • ISU’s 8-1 start marks the fourth time in school history the Cyclones have won eight of their first nine games. A 5-0 weekend would make this team the first to start out a season 13-1. Going 4-1 on the weekend would make ISU one of three teams to start out with a 12-2 mark.
  • Iowa State went 4-1 last weekend at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. The Cyclones picked up wins over hosts New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Weber State. ISU suffered its first loss of the season in its second game against NMSU.
  • By getting a hit in all five games last weekend, Aly Cappaert posted the longest hitting streak in school history, extending her mark to 16 games (the first seven of the streak coming at the end of the 2013 season).
  • Cappaert has been one of the best bats in the ISU line-up, as the sophomore leads the Big 12 in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. She is tied for the conference lead in home runs with four.
  • Cappaert hit three home runs last weekend, including a game-tying homer in ISU’s second game against New Mexico State and the game-winning home run in ISU’s 7-5 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
  • Sara Rice leads Iowa State with 12 RBIs. The senior had 16 RBIs in her first three seasons as a Cyclone coming into 2014.
  • Iowa State has four regular starters hitting over .400 in Cappaert (.600), Rachel Hartman (.481), Brittany Gomez (.471) and Jorden Spendlove (.429).
  • Cappaert and Gomez are the only players in the Big 12 to earn hits in each of their teams’ games.
  • Freshman pitcher Katie Johnson leads the Big 12 in innings pitched at 54.2 and in wins with her eight on the season.
