AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Academic Services hosted its annual graduation luncheon today for Cyclone student-athletes receiving their diplomas this weekend. An estimated 4,000 Iowa State students will earn their degrees tomorrow and many Cyclone student-athletes will be among them.

It’s a special time of year. Earning a degree from Iowa State is an outstanding achievement and it’s something Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard tells each incoming student-athlete when they step foot on campus for the first time.

“We will celebrate Big 12 Championships, we will celebrate All-Americans and we want national champions, but what we are most proud of is if you walk across that stage in Hilton Coliseum and get your diploma,” Pollard told the recent graduates. “That is what really matters, and that is what the ultimate prize is when you come to Iowa State.”

The Iowa State Athletics Department has a strong track record of academic success. This past academic year, over 100 student-athletes earned All-Big 12 Academic honors and over 140 Cyclones were recognized at the Scholar-Athlete Banquet for their success in the classroom.

A pair of Cyclones - Michelle Shealy (gymnastics) and Melvin Ejim (men’s basketball) - were named Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in their respective sports. Ejim and Hallie Christofferson (women’s basketball) both earned Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Congratulations to the 2014 Cyclone graduates!
