AKRON, Ohio - Three members of the Iowa State wrestling team earned All-America honors at the Asics University Nationals this weekend. Tanner Weatherman, Gabe Moreno and Luke Goettl each worked their way onto the podium in the highly touted tournament, placing second, fourth and seventh respectively.

At 80kg, Weatherman tore through the competition on his way to the championship match. Weatherman notched falls in his first two matches, pinning his opening-round opponent in just 54 seconds.

The Huxley, Iowa, native was then pitted against Zach Epperly, who went 29-2 while wrestling unattached for Virginia Tech this past season. Weatherman dispatched the Hokie in a 6-1 decision before pinning Iowa’s Alex Meyer to earn a bid to the title bout. In the championship, the Cyclone grappler faced conference-rival Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State. Weatherman fell in the title match by a score of 6-3.

In the same bracket, Logan Molina posted a 5-2 record on the weekend, earning three shutout tech-falls before losing an elimination match against West Virginia’s Bubba Scheffel. Molina outscored opponents by an overall score of 32-0 in his three tech-fall victories.

Moreno took fourth in the 65kg weight class. Moreno opened the tournament with five consecutive wins, notching three tech-falls and a pin to dominate his first four contests. Moreno’s pin came in just 52 seconds of action and he only allowed three points entering the semifinal match.

The Urbandale, Iowa, native’s only losses of the tournament came against Titan Mercury Wrestling Club’s Mike Mangrum and Steven Keith. Moreno rebounded from his loss to Mangrum, picking up a fall over Patriot Elite’s Sahid Kargbo to advance to the third-place match, where he fell to Keith.

Also in the 65kg bracket, John Meeks finished the weekend at 5-2 behind a pair of tech-falls. Meeks won five straight matches before dropping the elimination match to Joey Ward of North Carolina regional training center.

One of the Cyclones most active wrestlers on the weekend, Goettl picked up eight victories en route to a seventh-place finish in the 70kg bracket. Goettl picked up bonus points in every victory, notching four tech-falls and two pins (2 wins by injury default). The Clarkdale, Arizona, native outscored opponents by a total score of 49-7 in matches not decided by pin.

In total, 19 Cyclone wrestlers competed at the tournament, which annually draws the nation’s top collegiate talent.
