EUGENE, Ore. - Katy Moen, Iowa State’s lone competitor on Day 2 of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, put on a career performance in the women’s 10,000-meter run held at Oregon’s Hayward Field. Moen took 12th overall to become the seventh Cyclone in program history to notch a top-15 finish in the event at the national championships.

The field ran tight over the opening laps of the race, as Moen hung with the leaders through the opening 4 kilometers. The top 15 spots were separated by just 4 seconds as the event reached its halfway point, and Moen held her ground entering the final 5,000 meters of competition.

Moen fell a few places with just over a 1,600m to go but kept contact with the group ahead of her. Over the final laps, the Fairbank, Iowa, native held position and used a great kick over the last 150 meters to knock off five competitors. Moen crossed the line with a career-best time of 33:32.18, marking her second sub-34 minute performance of the season.

At 33:32.18, Moen clocked the sixth-fastest time in program history, moving past Semehar Tesfaye on the all-time list. The Cyclone junior was the top finisher from the Big 12, clocking the fastest time run by a Big 12 student-athlete in the event this season. As the 12th-place finisher, Moen earns NCAA second-team All-America recognition. The time bests her previous mark by over 23 seconds and marks the fourth PR of her 2014 campaign.

In her previous four races, Moen won two Big 12 titles (5K and 10K), the NCAA West Regional title (10K) and posted an NCAA qualifying mark in the 5,000m. The 2014 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest track athlete of the year can now add second-team All-America honors to her phenomenal postseason run.

The Cyclones are back in action tomorrow, as twin sisters Ese and Ejiro Okoro compete in the 400-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, respectively. Both will be championship events, with the 400H beginning at 6:41 p.m. CT and the 800m at 7:25 p.m. CT. Moen will return to the track on Saturday, when the Cyclone will compete in the 5,000-meter championship at 5:24 p.m. CT.
