Chalk Talk, Cardinal and Gold Match On Saturday
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team will host its annual Cardinal and Gold scrimmage Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Prior to the scrimmage at 11:30 a.m., head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and the Iowa State coaching staff will host “Chalk Talk” in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones enter the 2014 season after making its eighth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Iowa State finished 2013 with an 18-10 record, and tied for third in the Big 12 with an 11-5 mark.
Iowa State returns four starters from last season’s team, led by 2013 AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Mackenzie Bigbee. A junior and unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection, Bigbee led Iowa State with 3.21 kills per set last season. Joining Bigbee on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team is senior outside hitter Victoria Hurtt, who was a 2012 AVCA Honorable Mention All-American.
The Cyclones also return the majority of the members of the team who helped Iowa State lead the Big 12 in serving. Junior middle blocker Tory Knuth became the first Cyclone and middle blocker to lead the conference in aces and sophomore Ciara Capezio, a unanimous All-Freshman Team selection in 2013, ranked third in the league in serving.
The scrimmage also gives Cyclone fans the chance to see the newcomers to the Iowa State program. The 2013 Cyclones feature many newcomers. Sophomore setter Suzanne Horner and freshman defensive specialist Monique Harris joined the Cyclones during the Spring 2014 semester, played spring volleyball with the Cyclones and took part in Iowa State’s European Tour back in May. Joining Harris among the true freshman are Branen Berta, Alexis Conaway and Rachel Manriquez. Maria Fruechte and Samara West will be back on the floor for Iowa State as redshirt freshmen after having sat out the 2013 season.
“Chalk Talk” will feature Johnson-Lynch discussing the rules and strategies of volleyball with a question and answer session following the presentation.
