ISU Student-Athletes Give Back To Local Communities
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State student-athletes are giving back to the community this holiday season as they help needy families celebrate Thanksgiving by handing out baskets containing ready-to-cook meals. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) coordinated the community outreach activity which raises money to purchase the baskets.
SAAC president and men’s golfer Eric Lindquist noted that the student-athletes also pay for some of the expenses themselves to cover the cost of the baskets.
“It’s more than worth it,” Lindquist said. “It’s such a small amount to pay to make that big of a difference in people’s lives.”
The sophomore mentioned that participating in this program allows for self-reflection.
“I think it gives you a sense of how blessed we are as student athletes,” Lindquist said. “It seems like a small thing to do, but it means a lot to the people we help out.”
ISU gymnast Melanie Tham was among the student-athletes that participated in the program this year. The junior said the opportunity to help out those who are less fortunate was readily accepted.
“Its great for me to give something back to the community,” Tham said. “I feel like it’s the least I can do.”
As the Christmas season approaches SAAC is planning another community outreach program that will lend a hand to needy families. The program will be tailored to address specific needs of the individual families.
