MARACAIBO, Venezuela Iowa State two-time All-American wrestler Jon Reader captured a silver medal at the 2009 Pan American Championships Saturday.  Reader represented the United States freestyle team in the 74-kilogram (163-pound) weight division.  In addition, four ISU wrestlers placed at the ASICS University Nationals in Akron, Ohio, a large freestyle event.

Reader notched two victories to place himself in the Pam-Am final.  He had previously scored a win against Venezuela’s Ricardo Robertty Moreno by a score of 1-0, 4-1.  The Cyclone then took down Evan MacDonald of Canada, 3-0, 1-3, 3-1.  Reader, a Davison, Mich. native, was stopped short in the finals by Cuba’s Ivan Fundora after being caught on his back, losing by fall.  Freestyle matches are decided in a best-of-three style with the winning wrestler needing two period victories to earn the win.

The United States freestyle team took second with 62 points, behind Cuba’s 68 points.  Canada was the third-place team finisher with 53 points.

ISU’s Reader recently capped his second Cyclone season with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.  Reader began the freestyle wrestling season with a fifth place showing at the U.S. Senior Nationals, competing in the 74-kilogram division.

Joe Curran, a four-year veteran on the Iowa State wrestling team, was the highest Cyclone placewinner at the ASICS University Nationals.  Curran notched a third-place finish at 84 kilograms (185 pounds).  Curran was the 2006 ISU Outstanding Freshman.

Cyclone 149-pound starter Mitch Mueller placed fourth at 70 kilograms (154.3 pounds).  Mueller is a three-time NCAA qualifier for Iowa State.

Freshman Andrew Long took fourth place in the 60-kilogram (132.25-pound) division.  Long redshirted his initial collegiate season for the Cyclones.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Sorenson placed seventh in the 79-kilogram (174-pound) division.
Iowa State squad members Nate Carr Jr., Trevor Dearden, Joey DeMarie, Justin Hale, Dalton Jensen, Max Mayfield and Kevin McFarland also competed in the event.
