Steve Malchow, a communications professional for more than three decades, is in his ninth year as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications at Iowa State.

He is the athletics department’s senior-level communications director and oversees the athletics communications, marketing and digital media units. Additionally, he supervises Cyclones.tv, a digital network created to deliver live and on-demand content online, on mobile devices and via a dedicated cable channel.

Malchow, who worked closely with Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard at Wisconsin, is responsible for creating a positive brand for ISU Athletics.

Prior to returning home to his state of Iowa and joining the Cyclone staff, Malchow was served on Wisconsin’s Senior Staff (2003-05) after 11 years as Director of Men’s Sports Information (1990-2001) and one season (2002) as Assistant A.D.

He was the Badger football team’s media contact from 1990-2001 when the team played in seven bowls and won three Rose Bowls.

Malchow led communication efforts for the Badgers’ historic 1999-2000 athletics season, which included a Rose Bowl victory, Heisman Trophy for Ron Dayne and a trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four.

Malchow was named SID of the Year by the National Football Foundation after serving as lead strategist for Dayne’s Heisman campaign and handling media demands during Dayne’s march to become college football’s all-time leading rusher.

He also served as media coordinator for the 2002 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional in Madison.

Malchow was an assistant sports information director at Iowa from 1985-89, where he was the primary contact for men’s basketball and nine Olympic sports.

Malchow has assisted in a media relations capacity at a number of pro golf events, including four U.S. Opens. He is currently a member of the Big 12’s Public Relations Advisory Board, served two terms on the Executive Board of the Ames Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and participated in a 2010 visioning project for the City of Ames.

The Sioux City, Iowa, native has degrees in marketing (1984) and information systems (1990) and a minor in journalism & mass communications from Iowa.

Steve and his wife (Barb), a former Sports Information staff member at Illinois and Alabama, have one son (Bryce).
