Menze is one of the most important figures in ISU athletic history. He directed the Cyclone basketball program from 1929-47, compiling a 166-153 mark. Menze’s 1934-35 basketball team captured the Big Six Conference title with an 8-2 record. Led by his star pupil Waldo Wegner, the team allowed just 28.4 points per game. Menze’s Cyclones took home conference titles in 1941, 1944 and 1945. During Menze’s tenure, Wegner and Jack Flemming earned All-America honors and 16 Cyclones captured all-Big Six recognition. At the helm of the Cyclone baseball program, Menze notched a pair of second-place finishes in the Big Six Conference. His 1935 team finished with a 12-3 mark overall and a 7-1 conference record to place second behind Oklahoma. Menze was ISU’s athletic director from 1945-58.
