Dick Bertell played at Iowa State under Cap Timm from 1955-57. He was a co-captain of the 1957 squad that won the Big Seven Conference Championship and placed third in the College World Series.

 

Bertell, a catcher, was one of three Cyclones to hit over .360 that season with a .361 batting average. He also tied for the team lead in runs batted in with 26. This performance earned him his second All-America honor.

 

As a sophomore, Bertell hit .329 and led the Cyclones in hits, runs, and RBI. He received second-team all-district catcher accolades and all-Big Seven honors. As a junior, he repeated as all-Big Seven and earned second team all-America honors by hitting .328. Bertell also led the team in runs and hits and was second with 14 RBI. Bertell paced the team in stolen bases with 13 in 1956.

 

After his career at Iowa State, Bertell signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs organization. He played in the minor leagues for four years and then made his debut with the Cubs in 1960. Bertell batted .302 in 1962 for a career high with Chicago. He had career highs of 11 doubles and four home runs in 1964. Bertell also played one year with the San Francisco Giants.
