Dick Bertell played at
Bertell, a catcher, was one of three Cyclones to hit over .360 that season with a .361 batting average. He also tied for the team lead in runs batted in with 26. This performance earned him his second All-America honor.
As a sophomore, Bertell hit .329 and led the Cyclones in hits, runs, and RBI. He received second-team all-district catcher accolades and all-Big Seven honors. As a junior, he repeated as all-Big Seven and earned second team all-America honors by hitting .328. Bertell also led the team in runs and hits and was second with 14 RBI. Bertell paced the team in stolen bases with 13 in 1956.
