John Nuttall is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Cyclone history. Nuttall was a key reason for ISU’s track and cross country dominance in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Nuttall’s career accomplishments are astounding: an individual cross country national title, six-time All-American and eight-time Big Eight champion. In addition, Nuttall’s squads finished as conference indoor champions twice.
After being plagued with injuries for nearly two years, Nuttall began to establish himself as a Cyclone standout in the fall of 1988 in cross country. He was a key part of ISU’s sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championship in
In the indoor season in 1991, Nuttall would claim his final All-America honor, finishing as the NCAA runner-up in the 3,000 meters. At the Big Eight Indoor Championship, he would claim a crown in the mile that would help ISU clinch its second-straight indoor Big Eight team championship. Nuttall added a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the 1991 NCAA outdoor meet.
