NEW ORLEANS - Iowa State head cross country coach Corey Ihmels was named the 2011 Midwest Region Women's Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. This is the second consecutive year Ihmels earned regional coach of the year honors.

In his fifth season as the head coach of the Cyclones, the women's squad has posted their winningest season yet under the direction of Ihmels. They brought home team titles from the Roy Griak Invitational, Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The conference title was the first Big 12 title in program history. The regional championship was the second straight for the Cyclone women.

Iowa State's women are currently ranked seventh in the nation by the USTFCCCA, marking the highest national ranking ever reached by the Cyclones. The Cyclone women will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday at noon CST.
