NEW ORLEANS – The Iowa State men’s cross country team moved up to No. 3 in the Midwest region after a great second-place showing at the Big 12 Championships, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today.

The Cyclones were one of two schools to place all five scoring runners in the top-20 and defeated ranked conference opponents in No. 27 Oklahoma and No. 29 Texas.

The Cyclones were runner-up to No. 3 Oklahoma State, finishing four points ahead of the Longhorns and 27 points ahead of the Sooners.

Iowa State was led by seniors Mohamed Hrezi and Martin Coolidge who finished seventh and 14th en route to earning All-Big 12 honors. The Cyclones ran a 22-second spread across scoring runners, which was the tightest across all teams.

The Iowa State women held on to their No. 1 Midwest ranking after a 69-point victory at the Big 12 Championships, finishing with a team total of 35 points. The deficit marks the second largest margin of victory in Big 12 history (73 – Colorado, 2002).

The women were led by a trio of top-five finishers in sophomore Crystal Nelson (2nd), junior Katy Moen (4th) and freshman Bethanie Brown (5th). Perez Rotich and Ejiro Okoro finished ninth and 15th, respectively, to round out the Cyclone scoring effort.

All Cyclone scoring runners finished in the top-15, each garnering All-Big 12 accolades. Brown won the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award as the race’s top-finishing newcomer.
