TOWSON, Md. - Each year, the Capital One Academic All-America program selects distinguished student-athletes to become part of an honorary team in their respective sports. Cyclone distance runner Meaghan Nelson received Academic All-America Second Team honors, named by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Majoring in kinesiology and health, Nelson was consistently one of the top student-athletes in the cross country and track and field programs both on and off the track. Nelson accrued a cumulative grade point of 3.78 in her time at Iowa State.

This is not the first time that Nelson has received recognition for exceptional performance as a student-athlete. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and was named as an Academic All-American by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA) last season.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 18,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
