AMES, Iowa — Iowa State swimming and diving head coach Duane Sorenson announced Friday that the team will be adding six new members for the 2014-15 season.

“I’m pleased and excited about the class that we’ve signed this week,” Sorenson said.  “All six are outstanding athletes and more importantly they’re great people; they all are a great fit with our team.”

Sorenson also believes that this incoming class is among the best that he has signed during the fall signing period during his Iowa State tenure.

“All six have had a tremendous amount of success so far in their careers and the most exciting part is that they all have the potential to become so much better,” Sorenson said.  “Coach Kelly [Nordell] and Coach Jeff [Warrick] did an outstanding job recruiting this class.”

Mary Kate Luddy swam at Millard North High School and for the Swim Omaha club team in Omaha, Neb.  Luddy was a Nebraska High School state qualifier from 2011-2013 and was named Millard North High School Outstanding Freshman in 2011 and Millard North’s Most Valuable Swimmer in 2013.  Luddy will also be reunited with current ISU swimmer Kristy Kunkel, who was her teammate on her former club team.

“In Mary Kate’s junior year, she was the Nebraska High School state runner-up in the 500 free, but her best events are not swum in high school, those are the 200 fly and 400 IM,” Sorenson said.  “She is a very bright, independent young lady that is a fierce competitor. She will immediately strengthen our 200 fly event in both dual and championship meets.”

Laura Miksch, a sprinter from Columbus, Neb., swam for Scotus Central Catholic High School and the Greater Omaha Aquatics Leopard Sharks.  Miksch was named Academic All-Conference and chosen to both NCPA and NSAA Academic All-State teams.

“Laura is a true sprint freestyler; she has an explosive start, loves to race and knows how to win. She won the 50 free by almost a body length at the Nebraska state high school meet her junior year and came from behind to win the 100 breast at that same meet,” Sorenson said.  “She often has to train by herself during the off high school season and I know she will turn a lot of heads by the time she is done at Iowa State University.”

Danica (Da-NEE-Ka) Delaquis (DEL-A-KEY) will join the Cyclones from Winnipeg, Canada.  Delaquis attended Vincent Massey Collegiate High School and swam for the Manta Swim Club in Winnepeg.  Delaquis also qualified for the Canadian Nationals and represented Manitoba in the 2011 Western Canada Games and the 2013 Canada Games.  Delaquis will be reunited with former club teammate Karyl Clarete.

“Danica is a strong and fast breaststroker and has posted some very fast times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. She has competed successfully at many Canadian national meets,” Sorenson said.  “She’s a great competitor and with her times from last summers’ long course season she will become a major contributor her freshmen year in dual meets and at the Big 12 Championships.”

Kasey Roberts attended and swam for St. Michael-Albertville High School in Albertville, Minn. in addition to the Sea Devils Swimming club team.  Roberts was the recipient of  the Mississippi 8 All-Conference Award all four years of high school and was named the MSHSL Section 8AA Swimmer of the year from 2011-2013.

“Kasey is versatile swimmer and who loves to compete.  Her junior year she won the 200 IM at the Minnesota high school big state champions and was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke,” Sorenson said.  “She also is a strong freestyle and has a fast 100 back time.  So, she can swim so many different events and do them well that it will be fun trying to figure out what ultimately will be her best college events.”

Kaitlin Wistey will be joining the Cyclones from West Des Moines, Iowa, where she was a three year letterwinner for Valley High School and swam for the Des Moines Swimming Federation.  Wistey won the 100 backstroke at the 2012 Iowa summer long course state championships and placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 Individual Medley at the 2011 Iowa High School girls state meet.  Wistey was also a member of the Valley team that finished runners up at the 2010 and 2011 state meets. Wistey’s sister, Imelda, is currently a senior on the ISU swimming and diving team.

“Kaitlin will add speed and depth to our backstroke and IM events. She is powerful swimmer who is very coachable.  She is a student of the sport and is very dedicated to become the best that she can be,” Sorenson said.  “Like the rest of the incoming class, she loves to compete and will be a contributor in her first season as a Cyclone.”

Sydney Ronald, a four-year letterwinner out of Chippewa Valley High School, hails from Clinton Township, Mich. Ronald competed at the District 1 state meet as a freshman and sophomore placing fourth and was also an all-state and all-conference selection her junior year. Ronald holds the Chippewa High School records in the 6-dive and 11-dive format.

“I am very excited to welcome Sydney to our Cyclone swimming and diving team,” head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “Sydney has been a captain on her team at Chippewa Valley High School in Michigan. She is a great jumper which makes her exciting to watch on the diving boards. Sydney has a great personality, and she is going to be a lot of fun to coach next season.”
