AMES, Iowa – Janet Lovell has been leading a double life. The executive assistant to Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard has been recognized by the Iowa Mentoring Partnership for her work with Youth and Shelter Services through its Great Relationships in Pairs (GRIP) mentoring program. GRIP recognized Lovell’s work with the mentoring program as part of its National Mentoring Month 2011 celebration.

“(Lovell) has displayed an ongoing passion for working with youth and over the years she has dedicated her time and talent toward fostering positive youth development as a Sunday school teacher, a school secretary, and a volunteer with the Special Olympics,” the GRIP award release reads.  “Janet became a formal mentor with Youth and Shelter Services - Great Relationships in Pairs (GRIP) Mentoring in Ames in 2006 and has since mentored three young girls through the program.”

The Iowa Mentoring Partnership announcement recognizes Lovell for going the extra mile for the program.

“Janet is not only committed to her mentees, but to helping make the GRIP program better and she has gone above and beyond by promoting GRIP Mentoring within her place of work, the Iowa State University Athletic Department.  In the past, Janet has made GRIP Mentoring the focus of the United Way Special Project within the Athletic Department and has successfully recruited two of her co-workers to become mentors.  She has served on the Youth and Shelter Services Friends Committee and has been integral in helping give GRIP Mentoring pairs the opportunity to attend ISU athletic events at no cost - giving dozens of mentored children the opportunity to experience something that they have never experienced before.”

Pollard appreciates Lovell’s efforts inside and outside the office.

“Janet has done so much in our community to make Central Iowa a better place,” Pollard said. “If you know her, you know her life affirms the slogan ‘forget yourself and you won’t be forgotten.’”

Lovell has worked in the ISU athletics department since 1999 and at Iowa State since 1996.
