AMES, Iowa – Iowa State will send a quintet of middle-distance runners east for the second time in as many weeks, Saturday, to Boston’s John Thomas Terrier Invitational. Five student-athletes are slated to compete in the 1000-meter, mile and 3000-meter events. The Terrier Invitational is one of the nation’s top early-season meets.

Cyclone men’s distance coach Jeremy Sudbury is excited for his athletes to compete in the high-profile meet.

“This weekend we’re looking to let the guys get a feel for and race in a highly competitive meet,” Sudbury said. “It’s going to be a very high-energy setting and I hope to see our guys have competitive races. This meet is one of the premier track environments in the country and there will be a lot of good competition.”

The 1000m run will feature a Cyclone duo in Alec Baldwin and Joe Gioielli. Both competed in the event at last week’s Nittany Lion Challenge. Gioielli and Baldwin ran similar times in the race, crossing the line in 2:27.33 and 2:27.52, respectively. The race was Baldwin’s first in the 1000m, while Gioielli, a native of Wolcott, Conn., holds a top time of 2:23.39 in the event.

Alex Dillenbeck will compete in the mile and holds a personal record of 4:05.95 in the event. Last week, the Aurora, Colo., native also competed at the Nittany Lion Challenge, shaking the offseason rust with a 2:25.96 in the 1000m.

A pair of Cyclones are scheduled for the 3000m in Martin Coolidge and Brian Llamas. Llamas has two races under his belt this season, competing in both the 800m and the mile at the Big 4 Duals. The Westmont, Ill., native’s best finish was in the mile, placing second in 4:16.93.

Coolidge will be making his season debut after a very successful cross country season that garnered All-Big 12 and NCAA Midwest All-Region accolades. Coolidge enters the race with a personal best of 8:13.16.

Sudbury looks forward to seeing where Coolidge’s fitness level stands after the offseason.

“I’m very excited to see how Coolidge does in the 3000-meter run, being his first race of the year,” Sudbury said. “The other guys have a race under their belt. It will be nice to see him open up after a very strong season in cross country and we expect him to go out there and be competitive in the race.”
