Sanderson Posts Career Mark In Heptathlon

AMES, Iowa – Taylor Sanderson wrapped up competition in impressive fashion at Day 2 of the 2014 Bill Bergan Invitational, Saturday. The Bondurant native added two more career bests on the day, totaling five on the weekend. Sanderson set personal bests in the 60-meter dash, long jump and shot put yesterday.

The heptathlon kicked off with the 60-meter hurdles and Sanderson picked up the win, equaling his personal best with a mark of 8.35 seconds. Sanderson bested yet another career mark in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13’01.50”. The redshirt-sophomore vaulted the mark on his xth attempt before missing the bar at 13’04.50”.

The 1,000-meter run concluded competition. Needing just a mark of 3:08, Sanderson cruised to a career-best point total in the heptathlon. The Cyclone ran the race in 2:52.01, en route to a final tally of 5,245, also a career high.

In total, Sanderson set five career marks in the heptathlon leading to his personal best total score (60m, 60m-h, long jump, shot put, pole vault). His mark of 5,245 points is currently good for the 15th-best total in the nation.

Sanderson finished second to Kansas State’s Devin Dick (5,505). Wisconsin’s Deanna Latham captured the pentathlon title with 4,117 points.

In the weight throw, a pair of Cyclones threw in both the men’s and women’s competitions. For the women, Kayla Sanborn notched a sixth-place finish with a top throw of 54’5.25”, setting a new personal best in the event by over four feet. Kansas State’s Sara Savatovic captured the victory with a new meet record of 67’06.75”.

On the men’s side, a strong second throw lifteded Henry Kelley to a sixth place finish with a mark of 58’04.00. The throw is a personal best for the Cyclone junior. Minnesota’s Jon Lehman won the event with a meet-record toss of 72’5.75”.

Competition continues tomorrow, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. CT at the Lied Recreation and Athletics Center
